What is AADHI Screenplay Formatter?

AADHI Screenplay Formatter is a Google Docs™ add-on designed to automatically format Malayalam screenplays into a clean, production-ready screenplay format.

The add-on was originally created to work with screenplays exported from Yavanika, a popular Malayalam screenwriting software. When Yavanika scripts are opened in Google Docs™, screenplay formatting is often lost. AADHI Screenplay Formatter restores scene headings, character cues, dialogue formatting, transitions, scene numbering, and page organization automatically.

Features

Format Entire Script

Formats the entire screenplay in a single pass.

Automatically formats:

• Scene Headings (Sluglines)

• Character Names

• Dialogue

• Parentheticals

• Transitions

• Action / Description Lines

• Scene Numbers

Format Unformatted Scenes

Formats only newly added or unformatted scenes while leaving already formatted scenes untouched.

Useful when additional scenes are added after the screenplay has already been formatted.

Automatic Scene Numbering

Automatically numbers scene headings in sequence.

Example:

1. INT. HOUSE - DAY

2. EXT. ROAD - NIGHT

3. INT. CAR - EVENING

Renumber Scenes

Renumbers all scene headings in the screenplay while preserving existing formatting.

Useful when scenes are inserted, removed, or moved after formatting.

The tool automatically:

• Detects scene headings with or without existing scene numbers.

• Recalculates scene numbering.

• Preserves slugline formatting.

• Maintains scene order.

Example:

Before:

1. INT. HOUSE - DAY

2. EXT. ROAD - NIGHT

INT. CAFE - DAY

3. EXT. PARK - NIGHT

After running Renumber Scenes:

1. INT. HOUSE - DAY

2. EXT. ROAD - NIGHT

3. INT. CAFE - DAY

4. EXT. PARK - NIGHT

Split Scenes to New Pages

Creates a page break before every scene heading so that each scene begins on a new page.

Useful for:

• Production scripts

• Assistant directors

• Scene-by-scene printing

• Script breakdowns

Remove Scene Breaks

Removes all page breaks previously added by the formatter.

Character Extension Support

Recognizes common screenplay character extensions such as:

• (V.O.)

• (O.S.)

• (CONT'D)

Examples:

രവി (O.S.)

അമ്മ (CONT'D)

KIRAN (V. O )

Smart Slugline Detection

Recognizes scene headings written in multiple formats, including:

INT. HOUSE - DAY

INT HOUSE - DAY

INT-HOUSE - DAY

EXT. ROAD - NIGHT

EXT ROAD - NIGHT

INT/EXT. CAR - EVENING

How to Use

Formatting a New Script

1. Open your screenplay in Google Docs™.

2. Click:

Screenplay → Format Entire Script

3. The formatter will automatically format and number all scenes.

Formatting Only New Scenes

If additional scenes are added after formatting:

1. Leave the new scene headings unnumbered.

Example:

INT. CAFE - DAY

Do not write:

5. INT. CAFE - DAY

6. Click:

Screenplay → Format Unformatted Scenes

The formatter will identify and format only the new scenes.

Renumbering Scenes

If scenes have been inserted, deleted, or moved:

Screenplay → Renumber Scenes

The formatter will automatically update scene numbers while preserving existing formatting.

Creating Scene Pages

To place every scene on a separate page:

Screenplay → Split Scenes to New Pages

To remove scene page breaks:

Screenplay → Remove Scene Breaks

Tips for Best Results

End Dialogue with Punctuation

Dialogue lines should end with:

• .

• ?

• !

• …

Example:

Correct:

എനിക്ക് അറിയില്ല.

Incorrect:

എനിക്ക് അറിയില്ല

Proper punctuation improves dialogue detection accuracy.

Character Extensions

Character extensions should be placed at the end of the character name inside parentheses.

Correct:

അനു (V.O.)

രവി (O.S.)

Incorrect:

(V.O.) അനു

Scene Headings

For best results, scene headings should begin with:

• INT.

• EXT.

• INT/EXT.

Examples:

INT. HOUSE - DAY

EXT. ROAD - NIGHT

INT/EXT. CAR - EVENING

After Adding New Scenes

If a scene is inserted between existing scenes:

1. Format the new scene if required.

2. Run:

Screenplay → Renumber Scenes

to restore correct scene numbering.

Known Limitations

Dialogue Detection

Very short dialogue lines without punctuation may occasionally be interpreted as action lines or character cues.

Recommended solution:

Always end dialogue lines with punctuation.

Character Detection Heuristics

Character detection is based on screenplay formatting patterns and Malayalam text recognition.

Unusual formatting styles may occasionally require manual adjustment.

Privacy & Security

AADHI Screenplay Formatter does not store screenplay content, transmit screenplay content to external servers, or share screenplay content with third parties.

All formatting operations are performed directly within Google Docs™ using Google Apps Script.
